Virginia Choral Fest - 2024

Thirty-nine members of SVCC's Concert Choir engaged in both musical and social activities as they participated in Virginia Choral Fest during the week of June 25-29. The festival was a collaboration of three choirs: the Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir, directed by Dr. Janet Hostetter; the Roanoke Valley Children's Choir, directed by Ms. Kimberly Davidson; and the Virginia Children's Chorus, directed by Ms. Corbin Thomas Pinto. On June 26, the three choirs performed individually and then collectively under the direction of Dr. John Irving at Christopher Newport University. The following day, the choirs performed the same concert as a benefit for Norfolk's Street Choir Project at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk, Virginia. In addition to these performances, SVCC choristers enjoyed singing in and exploring Colonial Williamsburg, being entertained at Busch Gardens, and rafting on the James River.

Sixty-four members of SVCC's Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Janet M. Hostetter with assistant director Joy Anderson, traveled to the University of Maryland July 1-3 to rehearse and perform with respected children's choirs: Children's Chorus of Washington, Toronto Children's Chorus, and Young Voices of the Philippines. On July 4, SVCC choristers visited the luxurious Watergate hotel to learn some United States history and to film at Top of the Gate--the Watergate's scenic platform overlooking the Potomac River. The next day, all four choirs headed to New York where they rehearsed with the Children's Orchestra Society along with choir members from the St. Genevieve Valiant Voices and the Virginia Children's Chorus. The climax of the trip was a 2-3/4 hour performance in Carnegie Hall, July 7, where individual choirs performed 20-minute sets followed by the world premiere of Jude Roldan's Missa Virtutum (Mass of Virtues) under the direction of Hostetter with all choir and orchestra members performing.
